Call for Week of Action Beginning Sept. 29

by Oct 22 Wednesday, Sep. 26, 2001 at 5:57 PM

THE NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTIONS AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY, REPRESSION AND THE CRIMINALIZATION OF A GENERATION WHY PARTCIPATE????

THE NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTIONS AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY, REPRESSION AND THE CRIMINALIZATION OF A GENERATION

September 29th - October 5th!!!

WHY PARTCIPATE????

Our hearts go out to all those who have lost loved ones in the World Trade Center disaster. We empathize with the deep pain of losing a loved one, of having a son, husband, daughter leave in the morning for work, or run to the corner store, or go outside to play and never return. We have seen thousands of lives lost to police brutality.

Now we are being asked to forget about all the people killed by brutal police - to forget about how NYC has symbolized a nationwide epidemic of police brutality AND resistance to it.

They want us to lay down our fight for justice, silence ourselves and stop resisting. No. We will not.

They want a blank check to enact one repressive measure after another, detaining immigrants indefinitely, road blocks, searches, no questions asked. The effect this will have on brutal police who have already been allowed to get away with murder can only mean more brutality. No. We will not.

They want us to support or look the other way as racial and ethnic profiling single out Arabs, Muslims and just about anybody with brown skin. No. We will not.

They want us to accept whole new sections of people being criminalized before our very eyes-- in the same way they have criminalized a whole generation and imprisoned nearly 2 million people. No. We will not.

For all these reasons, and more, the October 22 National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation is more important than ever.

WHAT YOU CAN DO!!!

Youth and students from Cal State Long Beach, Cleaveland High School, Rio Hondo Junior College, Santa Barbara Community College, San Bernadino Valley College, Pasadena City College, UCLA, Cal State Dominguwz Hills, Mira Costa High School and many others are PLANNING ACTIONS FOR THE NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTIONS.

PLANS SO FAR:

CLOTHESLINE PROJECT: Students will display a clothesline with t-shirts with the names of people killed by cops.

CHALK ART: Chalk will be handed out to students on campuses during lunch to write on the ground what they think about the CRIMINALIZATION OF THEIR GENERATION, stories of people killed by cops or general statements, feelings, etc.

CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS: Students are contacting cool teachers and student groups to INVITE the October 22nd Coalition Youth/Student Network to come and do a school presentation.

TABLING: Students are planning to set up tables on campus to pass out fliers stickers, buttons and arm bands.

GUERILLA THEATER: People are planning on doing skits in front of students on the quad or during the lunch period to reinact police killings.

ARM BANDS: Students and youth are making arm bands using stencils cut out from card board. They will paing the over the stencils on pieces of cloth and hand them out to other students to wear on campus. Ideas for slogans include: STOP POLICE BRUTALITY!, FIGHT BACK! WEAR BLACK!, ALTO A LA BRUTALIDAD POLICIAL!, ETC. OCTOBER 3rd is a NATIONAL ARM BAND DAY. WEAR ONE AND MAKE YOUR STATEMENT!

PASS OUT OCTOBER OCT 22nd Leaflets: Go to shows, concerts, spoken word, movies, parties, malls, supermarkets, marches to pass out flyers.

WALK OUTS: Some students are planning Teach-outs for October 22nd on their campuses.

SCHOOL PAPERS: Put an announcement for the October 22nd March Against Police brutality in your school paper. INFO: October 22nd March is Monday, October 22nd. Meet at 2pm Olympic & Broadway --Downtown LA. Go to www.october22.org for more information. Call 323 769-6263 for more information.

GO TO THE S29 Stop the FTAA Demonstration in LA and Join the Youth Are the Future! We Demand A Better World Contingent!!!!

You can use any of these ideas of get together with your friends and make up your own action. LET US KNOW ASAP WHAT YOU ARE PLANNING!!!!

Be out there on October 22nd fighting for a future where it is no longer acceptable for police to brutalize and murder people for being in the wrong neighborhood, speaking the wrong language or being the wrong color. Where people aren't blown away for pulling out their wallet or a cell phone. Where youth have decent education and meaningful work, not years in prison. Where people can protest without being spied on, shut down and beaten by police. We must stand together and say in a loud, powerful voice:

STOP POLICE BRUTALITY, REPRESSION and the CRIMINALIZATION of a GENERATION!

OCTOBER 22nd--NO MORE STOLEN LIVES!

WEAR BLACK! FIGHT BACK!

your not suggesting

by civillibertairan Wednesday, Sep. 26, 2001 at 6:16 PM

That the police caused 9/11, are you?

I love civil rights to, but you must understand that the government has the right to suspend certain liberties during a war. War has been formally declared against us, and lives have been lost.

Certain liberties may be suspended. That might be justifiable, to some extent. (I'm not talking about concentration camps -- but restrictions on travel, i.d. check points, searches, etc, may be necessary.)

Therefore, the war must be WON, and won quickly, so that our rights can be restored.

Yes, I absolutely share your concern that this will result in more of a police state. But the first order of business is to win the war.

But to suggest that the police caused the WTC attacks? You can't mean that.

We all are aware that Bush had a major, indictable, impeachable role in the events of Setember 11, 2001.

suspension of civil liberties

No 'Democracy', we are not ALL aware that Bush caused the events of S11. I'm afraid your paranoid delusion applies to few that don't share your affliction.

As for the 'temporary' suspension of civil liberties it needs to be said that we don't always get these back. It took a revolution to win these liberties in the first place. If we suspend them today with far less struggle then clearly the 'terrorists', whomever they may be, have won.
