Tuesday, July 17, 2001 - Start Audio
-00:00 Dennis Bernstein: Pacifica reform activists score a victory today when Alameda Superior Court judge turned down management request for an emergency meeting where they planned to appoint five new members.. Reform faction represented by attorney Dan Seigel.. w fired KPFA host Robbie Osman, Barbara Lubin of Friends of Free Speech Radio: "delicious to be in court today, hear the judge decline Pacifica's request".. dissenting board member Leslie Cagan: "today's decision very very important.. their attorney said at least two more members want to quit.. today will be remembered as a real turning point.. management nominee Susan Estredge declined board nomination".. Robbie: "we sent a letter to the board.. that if any drop off the board within 10 days.. that person would be exempt from financial liability, and dropped from the lawsuits.." Dennis: "Thursday, July 19, is the end of the 10 day period".. Robbie: "..two members are anxious to leave.. Pacifica's lawyer tried to argue that the first amendment was an intolerable burden".. Dennis: "this at a network founded to support the first amendment".. Leslie: "it'll take a least a year to sort out a system.. accountable structures.. community based discussion.. to include all the voices.. Pacifica has to understand itself.. as a progressive social change movement".. Barbara: "I am so grateful to our dissident board members".. Discussion of how Pacifica can democratize at the national level.. Leslie: "not many models"
-16:50 Dennis: w WBAI news correspondent Robert Knight: "i'm almost ecstatic.. *laughs*.. but here at WBAI.. journalism jeopardized.. by the installation of a dozen cameras.. ubiquitous.. identify everyone at every moment.. can follow you to the bathroom.. monitor journalistic sources.. what they have set up is a system where there is no guarantee of privacy.. not a good thing for the workplace"
-21:00 Dennis: w Robert Knight: about last weeks star wars test.. Robert: "the test was rigged.. as if Bugs Bunny shot down an Acme missile with a big balloon attached.. the system would only work if attacker includes giant balloons with their missile.. the ABM treaty in jeopardy.. China and Russia say the ABM treaty a bulwark of stability.. nuclear non-proliferation treaty also threatened.. new US nuclear bomb technologies developed"
-26:00 Celia Alario: Exxon-Mobil now world's largest corporation.. their human rights record called into question w Chris Doran of Pressure Point.. "international outrage over US inaction on climate change.. the public wants climate change addressed, sustainable energy.. ExMob dirty ties to previous GWBush Texas regime.. 'Cancer Alley' in Louisiana (link2).. the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska.. cleanup a tax writeoff.. Exxon fought all attempts at compensation.." About last week's international protests against Exxon in 18 countries..
-33:10 Celia: the price of demonstrating a lot higher in other countries: Chris: "about the protest in Indonesia last Wednesday.. Exxon gas refinery.. the indigenous Aceh people live around the refinery.. mass graves around the facility.. torture rooms in the gas refinery.. Exxon pays brutal Indonesian military (think East Timor) $6 million a year to guard their fields.. reporters attacked.. human rights lawsuit against Exxon filed by the International Labor Rights Fund"
-35:30 Celia w Shadia Marhab of Aceh Referendum Information Center (SIRA): "3 activists stopped by Indonesia police on way to peaceful demonstration.. flyers found in their car.. activists arrested for subversion.. Kausar, age 25, (Chairperson of Central Commitee for Aceh People Democratic Struggle), still in prison.. (indymedia report).. flyers documented the Indonesian military given 'right' to kill all activists.. activists in custody subject to human rights violations.. almost 600 people killed.. i don't know if i can go back there safe or not.. NY resident lawyer Jafar Siddiq Hamzah, leader of the International Forum for Aceh (IFA), started to investigate Exxon.. he was tortured and killed last August".. Chris: Exxon contributes 40% of total Indonesian budget.. resources should be under the control of the local people.. but local people are being massacred.. the links between Exxon and atrocities are obvious.. one phone call from Exxon CEO could release Kausar.. Shadia Marhab: we need international support.. concerned about the people in outlying areas.. need attention.. more pressure on Indonesian government..
-51:00 Dennis w Ross Gelbspan.. "Exxon still denying global warming, stands alone in the community of oil companies.. US alone too.. other countries undertaking major efforts.. Bush shortcut to climate hell.. as result mostly of misinformation campaign by Exxon, other players.."

Monday, July 16, 2001 - Start Audio
-00:00 Dennis Bernstein: w Dr. Joseph Mangano (books), administrator, coordinator of the Radiation and Public Health Project, their 'Tooth Fairy Project' (link2).. voluntary donations of baby teeth.. also w legendary physicist Dr. Ernest J Sternglass, (link2), (link3), nuclear scientist, turned anti-nuclear scientist.. this study started 5 years ago. Backgound: A 1958 Barry Commoner (link2) study of 60,000 baby teeth documented rise in radioactive Strontium 90 in children due the fallout (map) from above-ground testing of atomic weapons (that study resulted in the 1963 treaty ban of above-ground testing).. since then there have been no studies to measure radiation in the bodies of Americans. (until this new 'Tooth Fairy Project').. Fallout from 60's bomb tests in Nevada came down in NY (map) and caused an increase in childhood leukemia. Dr. Sternglass has found that cancers and infant mortality rates rise around nuclear reactors (US map).
-14:50 Dennis: w parent Debbie Santora who lives 10 miles from a Florida reactor. her county has abnormally high cancer rates in children, high breast cancer rates.. unusual tumors.. her 6-month old daugher recently diagnosed with neuroblastoma (link2), a very rare cancer.. more cases in her area.. daughter on chemotherapy.. no family history of cancer.. Debbie: I heard Alec Baldwin talking about the Tooth Fairy Project.. if the mothers don't get involved nothing is gonna change.. people getting involved is where it's at.. the tooth fairy project very important.. we have to get these nuclear reactors stopped..
-22:30 Dennis: w Joseph Mangano: tomorrow's Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) hearing in Florida to relicense this nuclear reactor.. no health study.. Dr Sternglass, author of Secret Fallout, will testify tomorrow.. a giant spike in cancer rates.. years ago NRC required atomic plants to monitor Strontium 90, but AFTER Chernobyl (link2), they relaxed the standards, S-90 not monitored anymore.. S-90 the most serious of all the toxins.. by not examining this anymore, the government estimates are sometimes one ten-thousandth the actual.. the industry is desperate.. They are endangering the very future of our society.. Find out more, to send in a baby tooth: 800-582-3716 or www.Radiation.org..
-32:45 Dennis: w Janette D. Sherman, MD. author of Lifes Delicate Balance, Causes and Prevention of Breast Cancer.. when S-90 is given off by a nuclear reactor, other radioactive emissions come along with them. Children are particularly vulnerable.. these emissions are is a massive stem-cell experiment on our children.. also increased breast cancer rates.. cancer does not occur randomly..
-41:00 Dennis: w a 'Tooth Fairy' scientist from SF.. the bay area has a heavy radiation burden because of facilities at UC Berkeley Livermore Labs, Stanford, Hunter's Point, Richmond.. call 510-845-3139 for a personal presentation, and to get envelopes sent to you to mail in baby teeth
-44:00 Dennis: w Berkeley's Penny Rosenwasser of (Middle East Childrens Alliance) telephone interview: here in Jerusalem at the opening of the Jewish Olympics at Maccabiah stadium, eight protestors disrupted Ariel Sharon's speech, one of the eight a Holocaust survivor.. people tried to grab the signs out of our hands.. Penny talking on the phone live as she/they are being packed into a police van, (sound of doors clanging shut).. now w Allegra Pacheco, human rights attorney: we're just two miles from Bethlehem, which is under total seige.. here a stadium celebration, for Jews only.. we held up a big banner calling Sharon a war criminal, yelling 'Sharon is a war criminal' in Hebrew.. the protestors were attacked by spectators and then police dragged them out.. Ms. Pacheco: the Palestinians have been oppressed for decades, this is a liberation struggle.. we're being taken to the Police station.. because we are Jews we will be treated well.. we want the world to know.. don't support war crimes.. we are considered criminals, while the real war criminal is Ariel Sharon.. ((sounds of loud banging))
-49:50 now w Neta Golan founder of the International Solidarity Movement: our banner calling Ariel Sharon a war criminal.. people are being murdered on a daily basis.. these games are a lie.. the reality is that there are many Jews opposed to the occupation.. occupation is not a game.. like in 1936 when people knew about what was happening and ignored it.. it is our responsibility.. message to the America people.. US tax dollars creating this monster in the Middle East.. (With these games, Ariel Sharon) trying to exploit the identity of the Jewish people.. completely based on force and military power.. NOT IN MY NAME.. we are opposed.. People in Hebron have been under curfew for five days.. people are starving.. no water (being taken out of the van now).. back to Penny: everything appears normal here.. a lovely summer night in Jerusalem.. here's to peace and justice for all.. Bat Shalom followup report
