News Review- San Diego Bio 2001

by MultiMedia Ltd. Friday, Jun. 29, 2001 at 10:56 PM

Biotech convention over in San Diego

The conventioneers were well on their way home by noon today, when the Biotech2001 was offically concluded. Domonstrators, mostly discouraged and frustrated by massive police afront to their message, had largely dispersed by Monday afternoon. "They were everywhere, a real bummer," one discouraged demonstrator said referring to the massive police presence. Demonstration organizors met with police officials yesterday and exchanged cordial farewells, but letting the police and city officials know they were upset with what they regarded as police injustices. Promising to file complaints with the local citizen review board over what they termed widespread harassment and an infringement on their rights to free speech, the police response was anything but apologetic. Viewed within the city government as a massive victory for law enforcement, city officials were quick to point out that the events of Seattle were not repeated in San Diego. "Property was not damaged, people were not injured, the peace was protected in San Diego," one law enforcement member was quoted as saying. As for the message that the demonstrators were trying to put out, most of the public was either not interested or not certain what was being protested. "Starbucks? What was their issue with them?", was the reaction of one customer interviewed over the weekend. Indeed, the message of the protest demontrators was largely unheard. "I listened, but they weren't really saying anything, it was a bunch of hype and I don't understand what the issues really are," a young mother walking her children in Hillcrest (community of San Diego) said. Whether the message was drowned by the police presence or that San Diego is not a suitable venue for demonstrators is unclear. "Probably both," said a young lawyer who said he also watched the news and was interested in whether rights were bing violated. "Not realy , none that I could see," he went on to say.
