It seems to me that it is exclusively non-active members of the middle-upper class, especially their media, e.g. the New York Times, who criticize activists for being middle-upper class. (This phenomenon should not be confused with that of activists themselves discussing the need for more diversity among activists: this constructive criticism is not the same thing as criticizing people for being active, which is not constructive at all.) What is motivating this? Misguided faith in the system? Confusing democracy with capitalism? Thinking that the police are all about serving and protecting? Thinking that protesting is anti-democratic? Guilt?
