The Organic Consumers Association reports that the genetically enginered "golden rice," which the body is supposed to convert into Vitamin A, is not the miracle the Biotech industry would like us to believe it is. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD), which several people in developing countries suffer from, occurs when the body is lacking beta-carotene. Golden rice, which isn't even expected to be perfected for at least another five years, would only provide a child who consumed 12 lbs of the golden rice each day with 10% of his/her daily requirement of Vitamin A. The absorption of beta-carotene (Vitamin A) requires other nutrients that people in developing countries lack, and so even if consuming 12 lbs of rice per day was possible, little of the valued nutrients would be absorbed by the child's system. The green leafy vegetables, containing Vitamin A, provide the most healthy solution to malnutrition and health problems. Unfortunately, these vegetable crops are being poisoned by herbicides and fertilizers used to treat golden rice crops. It appears that golden rice is not a cure, but rather a curse instead.
