High gasoline prices aren't necessarily bad

by Howard Tracy Saturday, Apr. 28, 2001 at 4:43 PM

Gasoline prices which are equivalent to the US$3/gallon range are the NORM in most of the rest of the industrialized world.

The end of artificially low gas prices is about the only thing which can possibly make us reconsider our total dependence on the car.

Perhaps if the cost of fueling the ride becomes sufficiently onerous the general public will start to question just why so many of us have to drive so far just for everday activities like going to work, why we don't support a rational public transportation system and why we have so little affordable housing for workers near the places we work- in other words, the entire irrational, spastic pattern of development in the U.S.

The bummer is the idea that the price we pay will go entirely to stuffing the pockets of energy corporations, instead of, as in most of the rest of the world, going at least partially to public purposes in the form of taxes.

The recent gas price hikes aren't going to bite me very much- I burn less than 10 gallons of gas per month- and I live in LA.

To arrange one's life so that wasting ridiculous amounts of money and energy and creating unecessary pollution isn't automatic can be done on an individual basis. The question is why it isn't readily possible for everyone.

Perhaps higher pump prices will prompt the asking of this question.

Walking makes more sense than ever

Well, the rising price of gas is another good reason to walk or ride a bike instead of driving. Live closer to work if you can, and ride in every day.
