LOCKDOWN IN CLAREMONT TO SAVE BFS!!!!!!!!

Date: 3/26/01

AT 3:30am THIS MORNING, STUDENTS LOCKED DOWN TO CONCRETE BARRELS AT THE

CLAREMONT UNIVERSITY CENTER (CUC), THE ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING FOR ALL OF

THE CLAREMONT COLLEGES, IN DEFENSE OF BERNARD FIELD STATION.

BFS is an 86-acre educational resource comprised of coastal sage, the

endangered ecosystem that once covered the L.A. basin.  Inaddition to

serving the colleges, it provides local Jr. High kids, some of whom have had

no exposure to Southern California's native environment, with an opportunity

to experience the land.  The field station is also the former village site

of the Tongva people, and is a critical part of their history, culture, and

spirituality.

Students, faculty, and community members have been fighting to save this

amazing resource for over five years, but surveys, petitions, faculty

resolutions, and enormous public outcry have been consistently ignored by

both the college administration and the city of Claremont.  With all other

avenues exhausted, Students for the Field Station has taken nonviolent

direct action to save some of LA's last open space, and will not unlock from

the CUC Pendleton building until BFS is protected.

Come out and show your support for the field station!  To get to the

Claremont Colleges from LA, take the 10 freeway east to Indian Hill Blvd.

Go north on Indian Hill, then take a right on 8th.  The building occupation

is on the corner of 8th and Dartmouth.

Also, PLEASE CALL THE PRESIDENTS AND LET THEM KNOW THAT BFS IS WORTH SAVING!

CLAREMONT NEEDS SUPPORT

Date: 3/27/01

I just got a call that 8 CPD cars just pulled up by the CUC building.  There

are "33 cops in lots of gear."  It's 7am, still early, and WE NEED MORE

PEOPLE AT THE DOORS!

If you can, please come down to 8th and Dartmouth ASAP and support our

friends who are locked down!
