Urgent : something positive to do!

by a concerned citizen Thursday, Nov. 09, 2000 at 2:22 PM

Urge Nader to take a stand for democracy and issue a statement to the Electoral College!

Send this letter to Nader (campaign@votenader.org) and others :

note : Even if you don't agree how to or what to do.. this will focus attention on the Electoral College.

_____________________________

I urge Ralph Nader to publicly request that the members of the electoral college should at this point consider Nader's votes as being counted towards Al Gore's votes.

The Electoral College is not legal bound to vote for any candidate.

The Electoral College is undemocratic, and should individual members choose to follow or not follow such a request it can only serve to highlight the nature of this institution.

If Electoral College members ignored Nader it would further delegitimize the institution. If electoral college members followed the suggestion it would result in the will of the majority of voters in the country being fulfilled (Al Gore will win the popular vote).

Sincerely,

A Nader voter

two parties or one party

by al gore Thursday, Nov. 09, 2000 at 5:21 PM

It's sad to see the hysteria on the left in the face of a Bush victory. How quickly everyone seems to be forgetting that for months we have been saying that the two main parties are really one corporate capital party. And now that the less extremist wing of the corporate party lost we are supposed to get excited, upset, leave the country, etc. This reinvigoration of conventional doctrine on there is no alternative between the two wings of the corporate party is really ridiculous. Sure it's conceivable that there will be a difference between tweedledee and tweedledumbass but the real deal is in creating the movement through direct action, perhaps electoral ends if circumstances seem auspicious but ultimately we are forgetting just how positive social change happens and how the advances of global capital happen. The advances of global capital are achieved by our accepting doctrines such as the incredible significance of the differences between the two main parties and our inability to resist the sort of tidal changes that the election of the latest servant of capital shithead is supposed to represent.

Some Facts, not Opinions

by Citizen Thursday, Nov. 09, 2000 at 8:10 PM

Just the facts, M'am. Nader did not get 5% -- forget the federal campaign funds for 2004. Should Bush win the recount, his presidence is a direct result of Nader -- check Nader percentages in the close states, including Florida. No sane person not directly part of the Nader "family" is saying "Now the Democratic party will go left". Naderites: you are surrounded by a bombed out building; you've accomplished nothing; Nader and his acolytes are anathema. Happy New Year!

To organize now or not

by eoch light Thursday, Nov. 09, 2000 at 10:03 PM

So the election seems to be stolen. Maybe it hasnt been, who knows?

What the fuck is going on?

But now is a rupture in the system where some large protest might break through the torper.

Lets not devide our energy right now until things look clearer, ok?

Nader Electrical Vote?

by Guglielmo Marconi Thursday, Nov. 09, 2000 at 11:05 PM

According to CNN Nader doesn't have any electoral votes.

Short Circuit...

by Marconi Thursday, Nov. 09, 2000 at 11:06 PM

Oh, I get it, the electors would count up the state popular vote and change their vote if Nader put the state over for gore. Well, that would probably do it in Florida...

Nope.

by ADVERSE Thursday, Nov. 09, 2000 at 11:52 PM

I think we have to keep in mind that those Green Party voters voted FOR Ralph Nader, and Ralph Nader does not have the power to swap and trade the votes for him. That would be a travesty. Think of what could happen if third parties could legitimately sweep the people's feet out from under them and apply their votes to the major parties. Let's think rationally.

Nope 2

I'd agree with Adverse. Those votes are not "Nader's Vote", but the votes of Greens and people of other parties who voted for Nader. If those people had not voted for Nader we don't know who they would have voted for (and we probably never will). There is a huge assumption that they would have all voted for Gore. I've heard a lot of people use the simple argument of "Well just look at the math. If Nader wasn't involved then the gap would be narrowed and some states would have gone Gore's way." We simply don't know if it's true or not.

The real problem is that the whole system, especially the electoral college, was created to support a two party system. There is definitely a lot of things that need changing. Hopefully there'll be some good dialogue around these issues. There's certainly some time while we wait, and wait, and wait....
