Running Down The Walls
September 30th 2000
On September 30th , 2000, The Los Angeles Chapter of the Anarchist Black
Cross Federation will be holding its second annual Running Down The Walls 5K
run. The run is held to raise money for and promote awareness about
Political Prisoners held in the United States. The run also benefits the
Prisoner Art Project or P.A.P. The P.A.P. is a project begun by LA ABC. It
provides money for art supplies to participating political prisoners. The
artwork created is then auctioned off and the proceeds sent back to the
prisoners. It is hoped that this will relieve some of the needs felt by
those incarcerated. With the recent actions related to the WTO, IMF and
Republican and Democratic Conventions, there is an increasing need to support
fellow activists imprisoned because of their political activities.
The run will be held from 10am to 3pm at Griffith Park in Los Angeles.
Last year, the run raised over 1500$ and we are hoping to do much better this
year. If you would like to participate in the run, or volunteer your
services to help, we would like to hear from you. Any questions can be
directed to the following e-mail address:
"RunDownTheWalls@aol.com"
These are just a few of the Political Prisoners the proceeds of this run
will be benefitting:
Sundiata Acoli-New Afrikan POW. In 1968 he joined the Harlem
branch of the Black Panther Party. In 1969 he was imprisoned with 13
others in what was known as the Panther 21 case for charges motivated by
community work. Held 2 years without bail, the Panthers were acquitted
and Sundiata was released in 1971. He was harassed by the FBI until
forced to go underground with the BLA. In 1973 Sundiata, Zayd Malik
Shakur, and Assata Shakur were ambushed on the NJ turnpike by state
troopers. Zayd was killed and Assata was critically wounded. In the shoot
out a trooper was killed. Sundiata managed to escape but was captured
later and is now serving life plus 30 years.
Jaan Karl Laaman was a member of the United Freedom Front, which carried
out armed action against the apartheid, imperialism and the wars in the
80's. He was captured in 1984, along with other members of the Ohio-7 and
sentenced to 98 years.
Bill Dunne is an Anti-Authoritarian POW who was picked up on Oct. 14 1979
by paramedics for "being under the influence of police bullets" in the
vicinity of a shoot out and a wrecked car containing weapons and a dead
escapee. According to the police Dunne, partner in crime Larry Giddings,
and unknown associates of a SF Anarchist group conspired to liberate a
comrade from a Seattle prison. Dunne is serving a 90 year sentence plus
15 more for an attempted self-liberation in 1983.
