Up here in Berkeley we have KPFA. Well, trying to describe the politics around these Pacifica
stations would be impossible to do briefly.. try www.savepacifica.net for ample background.
Today's "Sunday Salon" program, 2 hrs. with former Washington and otherwise reporter/commentator/host
Larry Bensky amounted to a large let-down! Yes there was some good discussion about what the posts
here by Rafael got at admirably-- how the overall pattern of over-generalization about protesters as some
monolithic group is serving to trash the Bill of Rights in wholesale fashion. (Can you say, Profiling?) BUT,
apart from that, it was two hours rife with backpedaling and FEAR... just the way DLC has operated since
Clinton started ruining the party in the mid-80's... "we're going to scare the f out of you about the Repugs, who
thanks to us racheting to the Right have gone miles out-there, so you'll think you just HAVE to vote for ANY-
thing that can beat them, as fundamentally indistinguishable as the Dems might be, holding on to some
desparate hope that the Clintons, Gores, & Liebermans (with their Ron Browns, Robert Altmans, Alan Greenspans,
Barry McCaffreys, Mary Frances-Barry's, etc etc) will find the strength deep in their hearts, once elected, to
turn to the ultra-wealthy elite 3% who MADE them and refuse to act as programmed puppet. Right. But WORSE
yet, on this broadcast, was the use of fear as an overall message while they described the absolutely excessive massing of uniformed officers.. as if to indicate to listeners still contemplating the trip to LA that "gee, we think
it'll be ugly, we're scared, we don't want you adding to the mess, stay home and stay in your place." The
interviews with Democrat office holders talking about "gee, how I WISH I could vote for Nader.." really drove home
the capitulation of this public affairs program into a state of plain nausea.
It's shameful what's happened with KPFK... thank you for that stance taken in that resolution, we support you
all the way. Sure would be nice to get some real diverse radio over RadioD2k, whenever that comes about... like,
yesterday would be good. Anyone wanting could tune in KPFA's webcast, one supposes, but it's surely a mixed
bag. Perhaps at least the News at 6pm will prove more enlightening than most of what's available. Other good
talk show hours are, weekdays: Noon-3:30pm, and don't miss 5pm-6. Democracy Now airs at 9am, and they'll
be running the extended 2-hour version 6am-8am each morning this week (though that's always available on-
demand over internet.) The hour after the news, 7pm, is different each day and has some good shows.
Speaking of web-available, please keep yourselves informed and intellectually nourished in preparation for any
possible golden opportunities known as SOUND BITE INTERVIEWS with mass corporate media cameras! These
are a couple indispensible reference-laden websites:
www.commondreams.org
www.labornet.org (aka econet.org, aka womensnet.org)
.. and perhaps others... let's take it over to the "bulletin board" and have a contribution fest!
Fight the ignorance.
