So I'm watching CNN Headline News this week (a habit I've been unable to break, perhaps because of the sheer comedy value of CNNHLN's so-called 'news') and I'm watching the DNC and the local news coverage when I realize that CNNHLN seemed to be going out of its way to avoid covering the convention. And in some ways, seemed to be subtly attacking it...
On Wednesday, when Gore was to give the 'big speech', HLN's top story was about the sunken Russian sub. There wasn't even the ubiquitous major media story of 'protestors clashing with cops.' The whole 30 minute segment was void of any mention of the Democrats until HLN ran their 'This Day in History Segment' (the date was 8/16 when I was watching this). The segment went all the way back to 1998 to remind us that on that day Bill Clinton admitted to getting a hummer from Monica (is that really history?). Granted, not as sharp a dig as the announcement of an appointed second special prosecutor a bit later, but that's why I said they were being subtle.
Then, this morning, I turned it on again to see what they might do today. Again, almost no mention of the convention, except to point out that Gore and Leiberman are the Democrats' candidates for president and vice-president. Again, no real mention of the protests outside the convention. But then I realized why that was...
In the morning, before the NYSE opens HLN runs little 1-2 sentence news stories in the ticker across the bottom of the screen, each displaying the state where the story originated. The one for California said:
'No pushing, no rubber bullets, no arrests on the last day of the Democratic National Convention.'
One look at this website will tell you how false that story really is...
maybe the next mass actions in the US should be at the headquarters of NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, Newsweek, NYT, Washington Post, all other newspapers and all major radio stations
actually, HN doesn't stay exclusively with one event, leaving that to Turner's other network, CNN, which does. The two networks are designed to reach different viewers. But let's face it.... the coverage sucked on all teh corporate networks.
Need this action even be debated? Name the date and I bet the turn out will be signifigant.
