August 1 saw thousands of activists join forces in a day of actions against the criminal justice system during the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia. Activists used direct-action civil disobedience to demand an end to the death penalty, the prison industrial complex, the criminalization of youth and to demand justice for Mumia
Abu-Jamal. They were confronted with police brutality and intimidation - many of the same tactics the police commonly use against people of color, poor and working class communities and which this day of action was called
to protest.
Over 450 of these non-violent activisits were arrested and are now being held in two jail locations in Philadelphia. They are slowly being processed, and reports are still being received of brutality against them, including: isolation of people suspected of being "organizers," beatings, and denial of needed medication. Seven witness saw one woman dragged naked and bleeding. Nearly all are participating in jail solidarity, which means
that they are demanding to be discharged together.
These activists URGENTLY need SUPOORT!! Call these officials and let them know that you demand the release of those inside the jails.
