by eco Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000 at 7:12 PM

In support of March for Justice Against Mass Incarceration, Police Brutality. The MAJORITY (!!!) of the approximately 2 MILLION U.S. inmates are incarcerated because of the insane U.S. DRUG WAR! The U.S. drug war inmate MAJORITY is shown by adding together drug crimes, crimes to get money for drugs, and drug-related parole violations. MANY LINKS.

The Drug-war Industrial Complex. MANY NEWLY-REVISED CHARTS follow the introduction. At the very end are links for the August 16 Rally and March for Justice Against Mass Incarceration, Police Brutality, Death Penalty, political prisoners, the criminal in-justice system, etc.. Please pass on.

The Drug-war Industrial Complex. The MAJORITY (!!!) of the approximately 2 MILLION U.S. inmates are incarcerated because of the insane U.S. DRUG WAR!

http://www.angelfire.com/rnb/y/charts2.htm

The U.S. drug war inmate MAJORITY is shown by adding together drug crimes, crimes to get money for drugs, and drug-related parole violations.

"Nearly one in four persons (23.7%) imprisoned in the United States is currently imprisoned for a drug offense. The number of persons behind bars for drug offenses (458,131) is roughly the same as the entire prison and jail population in 1980 (474,368)." From the July 2000 report, "Poor Prescription: The Costs of Imprisoning Drug Offenders in the United States."

http://www.cjcj.org/drug/exsumm.html and

http://www.drcnet.org/wol/index.html#distortion and

http://drcnet.org/wol/147.html#risingnumbers

In addition, "The FBI has reported that almost one-third of people convicted of robbery and burglary, and more than one-quarter of people convicted of larceny, committed their crimes to get money for drugs. Moreover, 6.5 percent of the murders in the United States in 1990 occurred in narcotics-related circumstances" (The Washington Post, Jan. 18, 1994).

The Nov. 2, 1995 Chicago Tribune reported: "The latest Bureau of Justice Statistics survey of U.S. prison inmates in 1991 found that 27 percent of robbers admitted they committed crimes to buy drugs; 30 percent of burglars said so, and 5 percent of convicted murderers did." Reader's Digest (September 1996) reported: "The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) estimates that half of all violent crime and a third of all homicides are tied to narcotics."

*The USA has 2 million of the world's 8 million prisoners. So, the USA has 5% of the world's population, and 25% of the world's prisoners. The USA surpassed Russia in 1999 and now has the world's highest incarceration rate! It is 5 to 17 times higher than all other Western (long democratic traditions) nations. 6.3 million people were on probation, in jail or prison, or on parole at yearend 1999 -- 3.1% of all U.S. adult residents. The failed drug war causes far more harm than drugs.

The Drug-war Industrial Complex causes the world's highest incarceration rate; years wasted in brutal prisons; broken, one-parent families; many kids orphaned; bloody drug-trade turf wars; high violent crime rates relative to all other Western nations; many property crimes to get money for drugs; lower inner city property values; insane prison, court, and police spending; spending cut from education and healthcare; violent criminals released early to keep in non-violent drug offenders with longer mandatory minimum sentences; many unnecessary deaths from impure drugs; racist drug law enforcement and sentencing; racial profiling; private prisons for profits; powerful prison guard PACs supporting ever more prisons; rampant corruption; drug-funded, CIA-supported, death squads throughout Latin America for decades; Bill of Rights being shredded in the USA ...

> Prison counts are for December 31. Jail counts are for June 30. U.S. resident population is for December 31. In addition to inmates held in prisons and jails, there were 135,759 more people behind U.S. bars. An August 2000, Bureau of Justice Statistics, report gives numbers of 18,394 in territorial prisons (U.S. Territories and Commonwealths -- American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands), 7,675 in facilities operated by (or exclusively for) the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, 2,279 in military facilities, 1,621 in American Indian country jails, and 105,790 in juvenile facilities (as of October 29, 1997). *Jail rates 1928 to 1978 estimated as 50% of prison rates. Prison rate plus jail rate equals total incarceration rate. Click Adobe Acrobat t636.pdf link above for 1928 to 1978 prison rates.

WORLD INCARCERATION RATES, 1985-1995:

Y2K! THE USA IS NOW NUMBER ONE! In the year 2000 "in the land of the free" the USA now has the world's highest incarceration rate. The USA rate surpassed Russia's 1995 rate in early 2000, or even earlier. That's because Russia's incarceration rate today is actually less than it was in 1995. The overall incarceration rates below combine prisons and jails in a nation. Chart is in descending order by highest rate in 1995. 1985 rate not known for some nations. In addition, # signifies a Western (long democratic traditions) nation, and the number of times higher the United States incarceration rate (in 1995) was - over that nation's incarceration rate.
