This is national. Pacifica stations in NY and Houston are done. Leave KPFK alone, please.
......KPFT here in Houston has been on life support for a long time....believe it or not,I was once the 'token conservative' talk show host here...and years ago I tried to make suggestions to improve their business model...such as it was....that would have resulted in a healthier long term financial picture....fat lot of good it did......for my trouble...and for daring to support Reagan's election live on the air, I became the first of many programmers to be 'permanently banished' for being a 'threat to the station's license'....and now the ideological chickens are coming home to roost.....and all I can do is just shake my head and say "tsk,tsk...I don't want to say 'I told you so'....but I did tell ya"....mark me down as decidedly unsympathetic.
The idea that WBAI should be left to die is insane. KPFK is needed as is WBAI, KPFT, KPFA and WPFW, and more stations need to be added. There needs to be a national movement for liberation in this country and that movement needs a cheap and available means of mass communication. Radio is the tool of choice in South America and it WORKS. What is needed is a retaking of Pacifica by the real left and development of a people's radio network.
The sounds of this demise of a station that could not get enough money or business accumen to sustain itself is contaminating other Pacifica stations.
Is this true? Any information besides the fears, rumors, hopes and accusations.
What do you know that you can tell us as facts or actual heard words that KPFK is in danger or how it will be affected if NY drops out ?
