After the Civil War, Southern black men faced arrest and discriminatory sentencing for minor crimes like vagrancy. They would be leased to private parties and forced to work in harsh conditions in farming, logging, mining, and other industries, filling the demand for labor that followed the abolition of slavery. This lasted until WWII.
A panel discussion of the documentary "Slavery by Another Name" will feature the following special guests: Joshua Mitchell PhD Student, Dept. of American Studies and Ethnicity, University of Southern California and Elizabeth Kronbeck Professor of Ethnic Studies, History and Social Science, Glendale Community College
