EYEWITNESS HONDURAS This public meeting features Leilani Dowell, a leading organizer in the International Action Center and editor of Workers World Newspaper. Dowell was part of an International Action Center delegation that was invited to observe the election process in Honduras. The delegation also met with campesinos occupying lands, LGTBQ activists, and family members of prisoners killed in a prison fire in 2012.
Although Hondurans had turned out in record numbers to vote for Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, and after a solid victory in the polls her Libre Party announced a victory on election night, the country?s Supreme Electoral Council (TSE) declared ruling National Party leader Juan Orlando Hern?ndez the winner. Libre has denounced the TSE for fraud, and Xiomara has called on poor and working class Hondurans to secure a victory in the streets. Other activists on Honduras will also speak. Light snacks and beverages available. Donation at door if possible (no one will be turned away for lack of funds.)
