The Fine Arts Council of American Jewish University announced today the opening of ?Recreating Nature,? a new art exhibit at the Platt and Borstein Galleries featuring the work of Lauren Evans, Carol Goldmark, and Jamie Sweetman.
The artists in the exhibition, which opens on Sunday, February 19th, draw on nature as their inspiration and reinterpret it in unexpected ways through the use of drawing, painting, and sculpture/installation. The public is invited to a free ?Meet the Artists? reception to be held on Sunday, February 26 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.
?Goldmark and Sweetman are fascinated by anatomy,? says curator, Lizzy Bloom. ?Their interest rewards the viewer with exquisitely rendered drawings and paintings that are both profound and beautiful.?
Goldmark uses both dead and live flowers as a motif. Upon close inspection, the viewer might discover a smiling self-portrait, or other parts of the human anatomy buried among the petals. In her large-scale drawings on duralar and mylar, Jamie Sweetman takes advantage of the translucency of the material and positions one drawing behind another, juxtaposing images of flora and exotic fauna to create new and startling visual relationships.
Artist Lauren Evans uses images of the rhinoceros as metaphors, which she explains, ?represents the adversary and ally we hold inside our own consciousness,? and employs text to draw the viewer in. She creates unique digital prints and sculpture/installations to explore these unexpected connections.
The exhibit will run through May 18, 2012. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10:00AM ? 7:00PM, Friday 10:00AM ? 2:00PM. For further information, please contact Shelley Lavender at 310.476-9777 ext. 201 or arts@ajula.edu
