Do advocates for clean air need to consider trade-offs when promoting residential development on busy commercial corridors that are closer to transit? Where should we site affordable housing? Should we drive with our windows rolled down? What risk do bikers face when they travel routes with high levels of traffic? Learn from some of the latest air pollution studies and consider some of the policy changes that have occurred and might be needed to ensure healthier communities.
As the County Department of Public Health reports: "Studies indicate that residing near sources of traffic pollution is associated with adverse health effects such as exacerbation of asthma, onset of childhood asthma, non-asthma respiratory symptoms, impaired lung function, reduced lung development during childhood, and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality." What research led to such conclusions and how should it shape policy that affects how we live, work, and play?
These questions and concerns will be addressed by a panel of public health and environmental experts at the BREATHE LA Green Salon. Reservations required.
