The Orange County chapter?s May 21st event features will be our first ?Flick for Thought? for 2011. We will be screening ?8: The Mormon Proposition.? This event is co-sponsored with the Orange County Equality Coalition.
Director Reed Cowan, who is a former Mormon missionary, has made a film that focuses on the wealth and power of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and how the Church uses the National Organization for Marriage to advocate for denial of rights to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans. It points out that Mormon leader Thomas S. Monson asked to ensure the passage of the controversial California Proposition 8. It also points out the fact that many homeless in Utah are LGBT teens who were abandoned by their Mormon parents.
According to the New York Times, the film \"uncovers the classified church documents and the largely concealed money trail of Mormon contributions that paid for a high-powered campaign to pass Proposition 8\" noting that \"Mormons raised an estimated million for the cause.\" A scorching indictment of the Mormon Church\'s historic involvement in the promotion and passage of California\'s Proposition 8 and the Mormon religion\'s secretive, decades-long campaign against LGBT human rights.
