December 7 Colonialism, Racism & the Rise of Capitalism: Every Thanksgiving Day, progressive people are sure to point out the colonial roots of the holiday, reminding people that it sprouted from Westward expansion and the racist genocide of the Native population. It's also important to view this period in its entire historical and material context--why developed nations were expanding violently and seeking to conquer and wipe out others. Join us for a class on:
The development of capitalism as an economic system Why the growth of capitalism inevitably leads to colonial expansion and war The roots of racism, genocide and slavery The current stage of capitalist development and the redivision of the globe
December 14 Marx's Theory of Alienation Under Capitalism: The holiday season is the busiest shopping frenzy of the year, where a wide variety of new products are put on display and purchased in large quantities. But where do these products come from? Every product was the result of technology and the collective labor hundreds of workers all over the world. Workers extract natural resources from the ground, assemble the finished product and stock the shelves. However, all the profits from those products go to a tiny handful of corporate owners, who do no real work. This basic relationship between people and the mode of production is at the root of all problems facing society today. Join us for a class on:
Marx's theory of alienation: how people become foreign in the world they live in How production is organized under capitalism, and how it lays the basis for revolutionary change Is greed human nature? What's the role of technology in society? Social problems that emerge from capitalist relations of production Click here to register for the PSL Classes "Socialism for the Holidays."
