ImMEDIAte Justice teaches girls media literacy and sexual health through filmmaking
ImMEDIAte Justice aims to educate young women and genderqueer youth of color in the South Central Los Angeles area about sexual health, filmmaking, and media literacy. The 8-week fall program strives to create an innovative curriculum that fuses reproductive justice training, feminist community support, queer advocacy and theory education, and documentary production.
This event showcases the culmination of the community-building, self-empowerment and skill-sharing which occurs throughout the program by exhibiting the 30-second stop-motion animation films the young women created.
IMJ youth become aware of the unrealistic and detrimental media representations of women and these films represent their contribution to creating alternative and positive women & youth centered representations and commentaries on expectations they face based on their race, class, gender and sexuality. These films are meant to be shared with their families, friends, and communities and to be used as educational tools for other youth.
