STOP THE LAYOFFS AT L.A. SCHOOLS! In October, LAUSD handed out 4,600 Reduction in Forces notices. This means that unless it is stopped, on November 30, 990 workers will lose their jobs and the balance of them will be transferred - many to a job with less hours and/or pay. This follows a wave of layoffs of mostly teachers in the spring, and this time it is non-classroom staff, like custodians, engineers, cafeteria workers, librarians and others. LAUSD has been telling teachers that they are going to have to clean their classrooms themselves! We cannot allow the sabotage of the public education system to continue! LAUSD has the funds to rescind these layoffs. Los Angeles received its share of the billion from the stimulus money authorized for schools by congress in August. In addition, since the RIF notices went out, LAUSD auditors found several hundred million dollars that was previously undetected in their budget. They don\'t have to do these layoffs. But they are hellbent on turning over the whole system to charters, privatization, and getting rid of unionized workers altogether!
Support our union teachers and staff! Go to a public school on Friday morning to help leaflet and explain the issues to parents! Bring signs that demand full funding for education, and demand that the layoffs be stopped immediately!
