Independence Day Rally Will Call for ?Freedom from Oil and Coal? Citizens declare ?Independence from Oil and Coal? at July 4 Rally in Hollywood (Los Angeles, CA) ? This July 4, Sierra Club volunteers and environmental activists will stage a rally at the Hollywood Bowl to call for ?independence from oil and coal.? Those in attendance at the rally will ask for President Obama to back-up his June 15 commitment to ?act with the sense of urgency that this challenge requires? and develop a plan that will move America beyond oil in the next 20 years. Citizens at the event will rally in support of clean energy and call for an end to offshore drilling and Los Angeles? coal-fired power generation. WHAT: Independence Day Rally to call for ?Independence from Oil and Coal? WHO: Sierra Club volunteers Environmental activists WHEN: 4:00pm Sunday, July 4th WHERE: Hollywood Bowl 2301 North Highland Avenue Hollywood, CA 90068 VISUALS: - Activists in costumes (including one dressed as ?Uncle Sam?) and green hard-hats and holding signs - Citizens carrying mock windmills with "Clean Energy Now? messages - A six-foot banner that reads ?Declare Independence from Oil and Coal? BACKGROUND: Los Angeles gets a disappointingly high 44% of its power from coal-fired power plants located in Arizona and Utah, which are among the worst stationary sources of pollution in the United States. Coal-fired power plants are poisoning the people that live near them by polluting the air and water. Pollution from coal-fired power plants is also a major contributor to the catastrophic climate change which causes problems (including wildfires and drought) that directly affect families in Los Angeles.
