NEW DIRECTIONS, INC. HONORS FEMALE VETERANS WITH JAZZ BRUNCH
Los Angeles, CA ? Suffering from years of drug abuse and living on L.A.?s Skid Row, U.S. Air Force veteran Sylvia ?Renee? Banton never dreamed she would recover, let alone reunite with her family and begin a new life of service to her community. On Saturday, June 19, Renee will be honored in a celebratory Jazz Brunch at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Westwood. Proceeds will benefit the New Directions program for female veterans.
The event includes recognition of actress Katey Sagal, and of life coach Susanne Kahle, who will be saluted for her efforts to build a supporting group of volunteers interested in assisting New Directions? Women?s Program. Renee Banton will receive the agency?s Award of Service and Excellence for her recent completion of a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology, for her successful reunification with family, and for her personal dedication to a lifetime of service. Renee plans to enter doctoral studies with the ultimate goal of helping other female veterans in recovery. ?New Directions is so proud of Renee,? says Executive Director Toni Reinis. ?Her accomplishments really speak for themselves, but on top of that, she was recently Employee of the Month at our agency.? Renee currently works in the agency?s accounting office.
Says Reinis, ?women represent the fastest-growing segment of those serving in the military, and are much more likely than men to experience sexism, sexual harassment and sexual assault. Military Sexual Assault (MST) can lead to emotional problems and substance abuse, and increases the risk of homelessness by 60 percent. This is why facilities like New Directions Women?s Program are so important.?
The jazz and awards event includes a buffet brunch, silent auction, and entertainment by the George Gilliam Trio. Bubba Jackson, host of ?Breakfast with Bubba? on K-JAZZ 88.1 ? himself a U.S. Air Force veteran ? will serve as master of ceremonies.
Tickets are , including food, entertainment and parking. More details are available on the events page of the New Directions website at www.NDVets.org/about_events.html or by calling (310) 914-4045, ext 161.
