WE DEMAND THAT PHIL JACKSON STAND WITH THE FANS! We Support Our Team, Why Doesn?t Our Team's Coach Support Us?
As Lakers battle Los Suns for victory in the playoffs, the battle against Arizona Bill SB1070 rages on. After Los Suns made a bold and important stance against SB1070, by eliminating ?Phoenix? from their name to show support for the Latino Community, Coach Phil Jackson of the Lakers scolded Los Suns and openly stated that he has no problem with the discriminatory bill SB1070? the law that criminalizes Latinos and migrant communities by making it legal for local law enforcement to question people about their immigration status based on factors such as race and appearance. Jackson also stated that sports and politics shouldn?t mix yet he chose to comment on this controversial bill and expressed support for it.
Since Coaches and players are often seen as role models and heroes in the community, Jackson?s comments and lack of understanding about the sensitivity of the immigration issue has drawn wide criticism.
Since a large portion of the Lakers Fans are Latino and/or migrant, it is quite possible that fans in attendance of any of the three games scheduled for Phoenix will be forced to show proof of legal residency before or after the game.
We call on Jackson to clarify his statements about Arizona?s SB1070 bill and demand that he respect and acknowledge the loyalty and the contributions of the Latino and migrant Lakers fan base.
ON MONDAY MAY 17th, at 5PM, Lakers Fans will express their discontent with Phil Jackson?s stance on SB1070 by organizing a demonstration in front of the Staples Center during Game 1 of the playoffs against Los Suns.
