America's Second Wealthiest Liberal Arts College Has Rejected Workers’ Demands for Fair Unionization Process
Dining Hall Workers Hold Vigil for Labor Peace
Food service workers at Pomona College will hold a candlelight vigil on campus on Wednesday, March 24 to protest the College's rejection of workers' demands for a fair unionization process. Workers and students will come together with a diverse group of local religious leaders, including Father Patrick Guillen and Reverend Mary Goshert, to call for labor peace.
Following reports of chronic overwork, multiple injuries, unreliable hours and benefits, and poverty-level pay, 90% of Pomona College’s food service staff have signed a petition to College President David Oxtoby calling for a "Fair Process" towards unionization. On Monday, March 1st, more than half of the workers walked arm-in-arm with students to hand-deliver the petitions to College President Oxtoby. President Oxtoby has repeatedly refused to recognize the workers’ demands, endorsing instead the controversial and delay-ridden “secret-ballot process”.
The vigil is part of a pressure campaign that workers and students have organized against the College. The vigil follows a rally that took place on Saturday, March 6, in which over 350 students gathered with workers outside of the school's annual Board of Trustees meeting in an unprecedented demonstration of support.
