Hi Everybody,
I am emailing to ask a huge favor. The LA City CAO has recommended to cut the Cultural Affairs Department by 30 employees, or 48% of its workforce, AND *eliminate* the entire Human Services Department.
As you know I am a member of the Human Relations Commission (HRC), so most of the info I am fwding is related to HRC. Please see attached and links/info below regarding the elimination of the Human Services Dept. This will mean that *all* staff that serve the three commissions: Human Relations Commission, Commission on Children, Youth, and Families, and Commission on the Status of Women, will be layed off. If this happens, this would lead to the demise of the three commissions and public safety in Los Angeles.
City Council members must make informed decisions, realizing the existence of the HSD far outweighs the costs of any lawsuits and private/contract services needed to implement peace mediations around race, gender, religion, citizenship, etc. They need to realize the history of how the HRC was born out of the 1965 Watts Uprising and the role these commissions continue to play in making LA a great place to live.
You will find articles about the budget recommendation to eliminate the HSD at:

I would truly appreciate it if you could email or call your City Council Rep. or all of City Council for that matter, urging them to vote "NO" on cuts to the Cultural Affairs Dept and the elimination of the Human Service Department. The Mid-Year Status report will be heard in Budget and Finance Committee on *Monday Feb.1st at 1pm* and will go before the full City Council on *Wed. Feb. 3rd at 10am *in Council Chambers. Please feel free to forward this email.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ It is budget time of the year again and of course that means that the Human Services Department (Human Relations) is on the chopping block again. This year, they are talking about *complete elimination* of our department. So, as is my tradition each year, I'm encouraging people to ask their electeds not to cut a department that does so much for so many in this City. I tell you very sincerely with 100% certainty that your calls and e-mails in previous years have been immensely powerful.
Please take 5 minutes and send City Council and the Mayor a little e-mail message to let them know that we do invaluable work. You can compose your own e-mail message or cut and paste the "model" e-mail I have attached for you into the body of your e-mail. Please don't forward this e-mail--just do a simple cut & paste.
Also please feel free to call AND e-mail. Here is the contact information for everyone:
