Sunday, Sept. 20, 9 am ? 11 am (It?s early, we know, but a great time to enjoy nature.) Meet Marcy and the Co-Director of the Ballona Institute, Marcia Hanscom, at the Shallow Water Nature Store, 221 Culver Blvd., Playa del Rey, in the Matilla Village Center. Corner of Vista del Mar and Culver. Parking okay in back of Gordon's Market on Culver just to the east of Matilla Village Center.
Background on Ballona: Nearly six years ago the State of California acquired more than 600 acres of land in the Ballona Wetlands ecosystem for preservation and enjoyment by the public. These state-owned lands combine with more than 100 acres of natural areas the County of Los Angeles and City of Los Angeles own to form the greater Ballona Wetlands ecosystem.
Come out for a specially arranged tour of this Ballona Wetlands ecosystem where Co- Director of the Ballona Institute, Marcia Hanscom, will treat us to an orientation about this natural treasure on our coast. She will also explain some of the political overtones and current plans that some agencies (supported by Jane Harman) and other powerful interests have in mind for the 600+ acres that were preserved. This will help us understand what is needed to make sure the public interest and species? habitats are best protected.
Message from Marcia Hanscom, Co-Director The Ballona Wetlands have a long history. For the most recent history, within the last 100 years, there has been less respect for the land than in previous times. After the last 25+ years of activism to protect Ballona, more than 600 acres of land was finally placed in public ownership - we thought escaping the bulldozers. Now - lucrative engineering and consulting contracts entice ideas of "changing" things here once again....in the name of "restoration", but in reality destroying millions of years of evolution and destroying hundreds of species of insects alone - ones that do not any longer exist along the Los Angeles coast. Insects are only ONE category of species which will be adversely impacted if the community does not come together to Save the Ballona Wetlands.
