Congresswoman Judy Chu will host a Health Care Town Hall meeting on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the City of Hope's Cooper Auditorium, 1500 E. Duarte Rd., Duarte, CA 91010.
This area is pretty conservative. The entire foothills area is a Republican stronghold, but also an area with a lot of working class people. This is especially true as you run down the 605 freeway.
Chu has been sympathetic to the issue of Single Payer, but is primarily focused on retaining the Public Option in the health care bill (3200), and has said she would not vote for the bill if the Public Option is removed.
The right wing disruptors are likely to show up.
Many of them are clueless. They are on Medicare, and some seem to get Social Security for disabilities. They are using so-called "socialized" medical insurance.
Others lack health insurance, like the guy who got into an altercation with an SEIU member (who was advocating against healthcare reform) on youtube. He had no insurance, and had a big hospital bill, so he begged people to give him money. What a clueless fool.
The event is being held at City of Hope. I believe that the nurses there are represented by the Cal. Nurses Association, which has always been a solid supporter of Single Payer.
Progressives can bring a strong message of clarity to this event. They can talk to the disruptors and blunt their attack. They can come show visible support for the CNA nurses there and for Single Payer. They can stand up and be counted.
