A blood drive and bone marrow registration are being held in an effort to save the life of a 14-month-old Reseda girl battling a rare form of cancer.
Allison Zicree was diagnosed last month with acute megakaryocytic leukemia after her mother brought her to the hospital for lethargy.
She has been receiving chemotherapy at Kaiser Permanente\'s Woodland Hills Medical Center ever since.
The rare form of cancer usually strikes patients with Down\'s syndrome, which Allison does not have.
Doctors say a bone marrow transplant will offer her the best chance for survival.
\"For children without Down\'s syndrome with this type of cancer, the median survival is eight months without aggressive chemotherapy treatment,\" said Dr. Susan Storch, the hospital\'s chief of pediatric oncology.
Dr. Storch says 60 percent of patients who receive chemotherapy will not achieve remission, and most of those who do will likely relapse within several months.
