On May 9, 2009, a group of local Iraq and Afghanistan soldiers and Marines, will come together at Pasadena City College to give their testimony about what they witnessed during their deployments . These patriotic GIs, who are no longer able to tolerate the war are joining a growing network of GIs who are speaking out against the war . Winter Soldier is a reference to Tom Paine's famous essay, penned to inspire America's revolutionary fighters, in which he wrote, "These are the times that try men's souls . The summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country, but he who stands it now ( i . e . the Winter Soldier), deserves the love and thanks of man and woman . . . " Nationally, several Winter Soldiers have been held, but this is the first event in the Southwest where local GIs will tell the truth about the war . Several other panels made up of veterans, Military Families, Gold Star families, Military strategists, and GI resisters will also tell of the sacrifices they have made because of this war . The public will hear from former Marine Cpl . Rick Reyes , who testified last month at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about the effects of the occupation . Reyes said that during his tour in Afghanistan in 2001, translators were paid based on the number of tips they provided ? a practice that yielded numerous suspects but few terrorists . ?I started to feel like we were chasing ghosts,? Reyes said . ?How can you tell the difference between members of the Taliban from an Afghan civilian? You can?t . ? These testimonies come at a critical time ?as Congress is working on the next appropriations bill to extend funding for the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan into 2010 . Elected officials and selected celebrities will be in attendance . Requests for interviews must be submitted through the media team contact above .
