Los Angeles, April 30: CineBang! and KIWA present:
A night of film and discussion about Terrorizing Dissent, an exposé of events at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. There will also be a legal update on the RNC 8 (see below for more info). Thursday April 30, 2009, 7 pm KIWA Cultural Education Center, 3471 W. Eighth Street, Los Angeles, CA 90005 Map:
The Glass Bead Collective, Twin Cities Indymedia, and other independent media activists have released a new film, Terrorizing Dissent, featuring first-person accounts and footage from more than forty cameras on the streets. ‘Terrorizing Dissent’ shows the results of the million dollars the federal government gave to local authorities for security operations: the widespread, organized suppression of dissent.
After numerous house raids, eight organizers from the RNC Welcoming Committee were arrested and charged with ‘conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism,’ the first ever use of Minnesota’s PATRIOT Act. Now, the terror charges have been dropped, but two felony conspiracy counts remain. They’re not accused of any actual wrongdoing; rather, they’re accused of being criminals for facilitating the expression of political dissent by providing logistical support for other activists.
The prosecution of the RNC 8 is a naked attempt to criminalize aboveground legal organizing—it is pivotal to the future of organizing in the United States. If the RNC 8 are found guilty, this will serve as a precedent to prosecute, as ‘terrorists’ and otherwise, others who organize in their communities for justice, peace, and ecological sanity.
CineBang! is a screening and discussion series at the KIWA Cultural Education Center. CineBang! screens documentary, fiction, animation and short films and invites community-based organizers to discuss the films and current organizing efforts with the audience.
