The "Potluck for Progressives" is a group organized for the purpose of bringing together likeminded people on a weekly basis to break bread and talk about crucial issues affecting the community and the world.
At each meeting, people interested in peace, social justice, labor, and the environment gather to exchange ideas, talk about successes, plan actions, or just engage in a friendly discussion with one another.
Bring a dish to share! Enjoy the bounty that others bring as well! The potluck will start at 12:30 p.m. with a speaker or film to follow at 1:30 p.m. Please join us even if you can't bring any food!
On the Agenda:
Progressive Potluck
12:30 - 1:30 P.M.
Bring along your favorite dish of food, chips, dips, or soft drinks, and spend an hour mingling with progressive people from all over Orange County.
Featured Speaker:
1:30 - 2:30 P.M.
Tam Thanh Nguyen, a Chief Nurse Representative at a local Orange County hospital and a member of the newly formed United American Nurses-National Nurses Organizing Committee (AFL-CIO), will talk about the need to establish a universal, single-payer health care system within the United States.
Nguyen will compare our current "free market, consumer-driven model" -- dominated by big insurance companies which make billions of dollars in profit each year by limiting or denying quality health care to millions of sick and injured people -- with a universal, single-payer health care system.
In addition, Nguyen will review legislation pending the U.S. Congress and the California State legislature and offer suggestions on how we can rid ourselves of a wasteful, bureaucratic, for-profit health care system that mostly benefits the financial interests of a tiny handful of rich people on Wall Street.
Open Forum
2:30 - 3:00 P.M.
Open discussion, announcements, and other news of interest.
The "Potluck for Progressives" is endorsed by the Social Concerns Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Anaheim and is free and open to the general public. Although a small donation might be requested to help pay for facility costs, nobody will be turned away due to a lack of funds.
