In the aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, 60% of Afghan women are widows, many with children to support. Hairdressing is a skill that can be learned relatively quickly and by opening salons, women become economically self-sufficient.
The Academy's teachers include 3 American volunteers and three Afghan-Americans returning home for the first time in over 20 years. THE BEAUTY ACADEMY OF KABUL documents the poignant and sometimes humorous process through which women with very different experiences of life come to learn about one another. The film includes lots of footage of Kabul and the surrounding countryside too.
