Arnold Schwarzenegger and California lawmakers are trying to make working people and the poor pay for their budget crisis. Rather than finding ways to save jobs and programs during the economic recession, the state hopes to slash many jobs and programs.
In the name of "balancing the budget," not only could thousands of workers face layoffs, but they could soon find an increase in cost of many other aspects of their life--from a hike in sales tax to an increase in gasoline tax. Meanwhile, the rich are not asked to sacrifice at all. While workers are tightening their belts and wondering simply how to get by, corporations could see windfall tax breaks, when most already pay little if no taxes at all.
How can we fight these attacks on working people? What type of organizing will it take to not only beat back the attacks but gain real victories during an economic crisis? Please join us for a discussion about the possibilities for real change during the current political and economic climate.
