DESCRIPTION:
|
Gold medal winner Tommie Smith, who orchestrated the controversial civil rights protest on the winner's stand in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, will speak Thursday at Pomona College.
His talk, at 7 p.m. in the Smith Campus Center, will be part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Week at the college.
In 1968, Smith and bronze-medal winner John Carlos lowered their heads and raised their black-gloved fists while the national anthem was being played, an act for which they received both criticism and praise.
