Nominated as the Green Party candidate for President at the Green National Convention in Chicago last July, Cynthia McKinney served as a representative of the people of Georgia in Congress for six terms as a Democrat before seeking the Green Party nomination for President in 2008. She was the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress in the state of Georgia. The Green Party made history in July by nominating the nation's first all-woman-of color ticket. McKinney named longtime community organizer, journalist and former director of the Hip Hop Caucus, Rosa Clemente, as her running mate.
The Green Party of California holds periodic assemblies to revise its platform, adopt internal bylaws, elect state officers, and other internal business. The August 23 and 24 Assembly will also see the party adopting positions on the s tate initiatives slated for the November ballot.
The August State Assembly is hosted by the Green Party of Orange County. The GPOC last played host to a GPCA State Assembly in 2003 in Fullerton. The local party has already endorsed the candidacy of Tom Lash for U.S. Congress in the 46th District. Greens previously serving in office in Orange County include Karl Warkomski, who served on the founding city council and later as mayor of the city of Aliso Viejo.
