As its members who work the docks consider a tentative contract agreement, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union is also turning its sights 95 miles inland. Members of the ILWU will rally with workers at the Rite Aid distribution center in Lancaster from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25 across from the warehouse at 2801 West Ave. H.
The 600-plus workers at the Lancaster warehouse voted last March to join ILWU Local 26. Contract talks began June 26. The workers' bargaining team says negotiations are moving slowly while the company fires, disciplines and harasses employees. Around 54 people have been fired or disciplined since the March 12-14 election, including 10 active union supporters. The company has stepped up its production standards and toughened its break policies, making working conditions even harsher than they were when the workers decided they needed a union.
