Pomona, CA – On Tuesday, May 27th, beginning at 5 PM at the corner of Hamilton and Grand Ave. in Pomona, local community leaders and residents will join together in a march and rally to demand that the City of Pomona put a stop to mid-day checkpoints that target low-income working people struggling to take care of their families.
They will also speak directly to the Pomona City Council at their meeting right after the march on the night of May 27th
Intended to catch drunk drivers, the checkpoints are instead primarily impacting those who cannot present a driver’s license. Instead of asking the driver to park his/her vehicle and find a licensed driver, the vehicles are impounded, often leaving people in the middle of the street with their small children and belongings.
The cars are typically impounded for 30 days, leading to exuberant fees to have the car released This policy threatens the very livelihoods of families already living in or on the edge of poverty
We support catching drunk drivers, and that is why we encourage the City of Pomona to plan the checkpoints for days and times when more drunk drivers are likely to be encountered—at night and on the weekends. We do not support checkpoints that target hardworking people as they leave their jobs or families picking up their children at school. This does not make Pomona a safer city.
It does create a climate of fear where hardworking residents of Pomona feel under attack by the very officials that they depend on to protect them
