Community members chose to gather at Dolphin Park to highlight the struggles of students, parents, and teachers with health effects caused by pollutants at neighboring Del Amo Elementary. Community members, community organizers, health experts, parents, students, and residents will all be available for interviews. Background: The cities of Carson, Wilmington, and Long Beach are overburdened with health risks from various sources of toxic pollution. Students and teachers at Del Amo Elementary School have complained of health effects experienced during school hours. People’s CORE conducted a study that gathered community specific data on the health effects experienced after incidents of local refinery flares. Approximately 95% of Carson residents surveyed who live near specific refineries experience negative health effects after refinery flares and nearly 75% of Carson residents surveyed believe that local refineries negatively affect their or their family’s health. Community members demand that calls to the South Coast Air Quality Management District about air refinery flare events be dealt with in a timely manner. The health of community members must be a priority.
