What: Troquero Shutdown (truck driver)
When: Monday, Nov. 19, 2007
Where: Banning Park
250 E. Pacific Coast Highway
Wilmington, CA
Who: Port Truck Drivers, number of participation unknown until then
facilitated by the IWW
Why: Diesel There has been a sudden rise in the cost of diesel and the drivers have been burdened with the increase in price. Trucking companies have NOT increased the pay for the diesel or an increase due to the cost of living. The shippers and trucking companies must resolve this lack of money. All troqueros can do is shut down.
Traffic School A new law this year prohibits commercial truck drivers from attending traffic school even if the traffic citation occurred in a personal car. Most troqueros drive at least 60 hours a week and then drive their personal cars. Taking away traffic school is jeopardizing our livelihoods and is counter-productive in securing safe highways.
Rest Areas There are not enough rest areas in this state and those that do exist are closed most of the time. Troqueros cannot pull of any highway and sleep as most cities give tickets for parking the trucks and trailers on municipal streets. The CHP is intensified a campaign to give tickets to troqueros for pulling to the side of a highway to sleep forcing them to continue driving when tired until we find a commercial truck stop. This endangers the life of the driver and that of the public.
Biennial Inspection of Terminals The fee has increased from 0 to 0 and is being assessed incorrectly to the troqueros. The CHP is very aware of the evasive devices utilized by the trucking companies in evading paying the fee and instead go after the troqueros.
Driver’s Licenses WE want the DMV to stop denying our undocumented community driver’s licenses. Our family members, neighbors, and community members are undocumented due to political fighting in Washington DC and should not be punished. Testing and issuing driver’s licenses is a safety issue.
Clean Truck Programs WE all support the need for clean air but the truck drivers cannot afford to buy new trucks. The CARB and the ports are entering into an illegal scheme with the trucking companies to fund the purchase of these new trucks to the companies and agree that they will be “rented” to the drivers in order to continue the mis-classifying us as “independent contractors” in order to deny us of our labor rights. This R.I.C.O. activity must STOP!!!
TWIC Credential The 16,000 troqueros working the Port are not the terrorists so don’t punish us.
0/hour Until the leasing regulations in the trucking industry are enforced the driver and truck will be continued to be treated as a single unit. Being in reality employees, many using a truck as a tool of the trade, we will strike in the future of a wage (including the truck which for now is a tool of the trade) of 0 an hour.
