Artist Residences and Inter/National Art

In this one-day symposium we will look at the historical background and philosophical, political, social, and cultural functions of artist residences (past and present) and interrogate the premises of such institutions in the present day.

Lecture: Dr. Angela Windholz presents "Artists Residences between Artistic Self-Definition and National Representation", an investigation of conceptions for residences for artists abroad, concentrating on the intrinsic ideological and political conditions and the institutionalization of the Grand Tour.

Screening: "Women Behind the Camera"; an in-depth look at the lives of camerawomen and their struggles to succeed in a male-dominated field - directed by Alexis Kasilovsky.

Screening: Emmy Award nominated "Afghanistan Unveiled"; a collection of films by female Afghan directors and camerawomen documenting the plight of Afghan women after the fall of the Taliban.
