STUDY: MET\\'S FLUORIDATION WILL PUT 83,000 S. CAL KIDS AT RISK
News Conference Monday to Discuss New Science on Fluoride\\'s Harm
BACKGROUND:
In October, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California will start adding fluoride to the tap water of 18 million Southern Californians in LA, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. But since Met voted to fluoridate in 2005, new evidence on fluoride\\'s health risks has dramatically altered the debate on this issue.
The American Dental Association now advises parents of formula-fed infants to mix it with non-fluoridated water. A National Research Council report found that fluoride can disrupt hormones and damage the nervous system, and a Harvard study found a link between fluoridation and a rare bone cancer in teenage boys.
At noon Monday, Met\\'s directors will get a briefing on new developments in fluoride science, but they\\'re allowing only a 5-minute presentation by Dr. Kathy Thiessen, a member of the National Research Council panel, who is coming from Tennessee to share her expertise. Before the briefing, Thiessen will speak at a news conference to discuss the panel\\'s findings. At the news conference, Environmental Working Group will release a study calculating that under Met\\'s plan, 83,000 children will be pushed over the EPA\\'s safe daily dose of fluoride.
