History passed a grim milestone this month as the brutal Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza completed its 40th year. While poverty, military repression, and denial of basic human rights have been a daily feature of life for millions of Palestinians living in the Occupied Territories, Israel?s latest assault on Gaza has raised the horror to new levels. Several dozen Palestinians, mostly unarmed civilians, have been killed by Israeli attacks in the last month, and Israel has ?arrested? over 60 members of the elected Hamas government. In fact, since Palestinians voted for Hamas eighteen months ago, the U.S. and Israel have imposed a suffocating blockade on both Gaza and the West Bank. The results? Over 80% of Palestinians live in poverty. Some 84% of Gazans and 60% of West Bank residents have been forced to reduce spending since the blockade started. Fully one-third of Palestinians are food insecure. How can such suffering be allowed to happen - and even defended by U.S. and Israeli officials as ?justified?? Is there an alternative to Israel?s war and occupation?
Also, what is behind the fighting between the two Palestinian parties, Hamas and Fatah? And how can justice for ordinary Palestinians ever be achieved?
