Mr. Tezozomoc, one of the elected leaders of the South Central Farmers, will be our guest and speak on "Food Sovereignty: Urban Food Desert Scapes" at the L.A. Greens' Earth Day meeting, Wed., April 18 at 7:00 PM.
Food sovereignty is the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems.
For fourteen years the South Central Farmers cultivated the land at 41st and Alameda, surrounded by an urban desert of warehouses and rail lines, providing crops for 350 low income families.
From 2002 to 2006 Tezozomoc, along with fellow leader Rufina Juarez, lead the struggle to resist eviction from the Farm for the sake of corporate profit and political maneuvering.
Today the South Central Farmers continue their mission to bring healthy produce to economically disadvantaged inner city communities.
The South Central Farmers Health and Education Fund celebrates the depth and power of our earth and her resources to give and to teach. In a community and city surrounded by concrete and pollution the SCFHEF seeks to continue their work of connecting the care and stewardship of the earth with the struggle for justice and equality for all. www.southcentralfarmers.com
There will be vegetarian food, bring a dish to share if you'd like.
