GARMENT WORKERS TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT NIKE\\'S DEPENDENCE ON SWEATSHOPS
Students, Members of the Community, and Workers from the Dominican Republic to Rally at Niketown to Demand that Nike Commit to Sourcing from Good Factories
March 25, 2007 - United Students Against Sweatshops, the largest student anti-sweatshop group in the United States and Canada, will be bringing Nike workers to speak about Nike\\'s labor practices at the Niketown store in Los Angeles. Students, workers, and members o the community will protest Nike\\'s continued dependence upon sweatshop labor, as well as their continued efforts to close down factories in which workers\\' rights are trulu respected.
After requiring their suppliers to recognize union organizations at BJ&B, a factory int he Dominican Republic that supplies baseball caps bearing major university logos, Nike, as well as other brands like Adidas, has reneged on its promise to end sweatshop conditions by withdrawing orders from this factory. Recently, this lack of orders forced the factory to close its doors, leaving the workers of the factory without jobs and the community of Villa Altagracia devastated. Yenny Perez, one of the workers from the BJ&B factory, will speak about the ways in which Nike undermined the workers\\' attempts to transform their working conditions, eventually leading to the factory\\'s closure.
