Join the ANSWER Coalition for a film and forum to honor Black History Month and the ongoing struggle of African Americans against racism and inequality. There will be a film, political talks and plenty of discussion.
We'll screen "The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till," a new documentary about the brutal, racist murder of 14-year-old African American Emmett Till. In August 1955, Till was abducted from his uncle's home in Money, Mississippi. Three days later, his body was found in the nearby Tallahatchie River. His crime was nothing more than allegedly whistling at a white woman. Till's killers were acquitted by an all-white jury that year. They confessed to the racist crime in "Look" magazine in 1956, but were never retried.
"The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till" documents the events surrounding Till's murder and the struggle for justice in the 50 years since. This case embodies the racist violence experienced by African Americans at the hands of the U.S. government and their allies in the KKK. The film won the Freedom of Expression Award and also helped lead to the re-opening of the case by the U.S. Justice Department in 2004. Now, in 2007, a grand jury in Mississippi is being convened to possibly issue indictments in the Till case. (Dir. Keith Beauchamp, 70 min.)
Plus: Update on Gary Tyler's fight for freedom. And organize for March 17 protest in LA.
