Teresa Gutierrez and Diane Mathowitz participated in a fact finding delegation to the Philippines which included representatives of the International Action Center, BAYAN-USA and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement from New York City. During their trip, they attended massive demonstrations that forced the postponement of the annual meeting of ASEAN - a regional trade group dominated by the interests of U.S. corporations and banks. A tremendous wave of repression has been sweeping the country. In the two weeks that the IAC delegation was in the country, seven people were killed. Labor leaders, students, journalists and human rights activists are just some of the sectors being targeted. Their crime? Fighting for economic rights and justice. US-backed economic policies have forced Filipinos to leave their country in a mass exodus. Most workers earn only a day, forcing 3,000 people to leave the country every single day. Join us on Tuesday, February 6, at 7 pm to learn more about the struggle in solidarity with the Filipino people, and to hear a report from the Feb 2-3 conference for immigrant rights!
