The Invite:

We are currently in the preliminary stages of organizing a Queer Women of Color International Encuentro/Exchange (working title), which will consist of a series of events, workshops and performances addressing the themes of immigration and sexuality. The Encuentro/Exchange will take place in Los Angeles, CA and has been tentatively scheduled for late-August or early-September 2007 in Los Angeles, CA. We are inviting all radical & feminist queer women of color and trans-people of color to help in the visioning, organizing and building of a radical queer feminist of color movement of dialogue and action. Please come and contribute your experience and ideas as we collaboratively envision and plan this event during this second organizing meeting.

*The organizing and planning of this event will be primarily by queer women of color and trans-people of color, although we will discuss how allies will be incorporated and integrated into the actual Encuentro/Exchange.

What\'s an encuentro?

An encuentro is a gathering, a get-together, a meeting, an opportunity to exchange, converse, strategize and act in collaboration with other activists, community members, students and artists around central topic(s) or theme(s). We use the term to forefront the radical potential of collaborative dialogue and action.

A little background:

The initial idea to organize a Queer Women of Color International Encuentro/Exchange in Los Angeles came about during the International Meeting of the 2006 Marcha Lésbica in México City. For three years, the Mexico City Marcha Lésbica has been a transnational event that attracts queer, lesbian, and bisexual women from Latin America, the United States and Canada. The Mexico City Lesbian March is an explicitly radical and feminist political gathering and is the largest public action of its kind to be held in Latin America. As the organizing of such an event takes a tremendous amount of energy and resources the organizing committee of the Marcha Lésbica posed the possibility of the March taking place in another location, namely, Los Angeles. As the Marcha has historically been a radical response to the political and cultural climate within which lesbianas live their daily lives, we have decided to organize an Encuentro/Exchange that speaks to ours. We are calling all radical, feminist and queer women of color and trans-people of color to come together to dialogue, speak out and take to the streets of L.A.!
