The SoCal Chapter of Movement for a Democratic Society ( MDS ) is putting out a call to all those who are interested in continuing to support the truckers at the Port of Los Angeles to attend a meeting of the troqueros in Banning Park in Wilmington on Saturday, May 13th at 12 Noon. The Port Truckers , most of whom are immigrants, held a strike on May Day and effectively shut down the Port . At their May 13th meeting at Banning Park , the troqueros will meet , discuss and plan possible additional strike actions later this month.
Banning Park is located in Wilmington at the corner of Avalon and Pacific Coast Highway , a few blocks East of the 110 freeway.
We encourage all those who are interested to attend the truckers' meeting to learn what the truckers are planning and how those of us who are not truckers can best provide the truckers with assistance and support.
After the truckers' meeting, please join MDS ( about 2 PM ) to discuss how we can mobilize support , labor solidarity and assistance for the truckers and their on-going organizing efforts.
The recently formed SoCal MDS chapter is connected to the recently re-formed and re-membered Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). Most recently, student and non-student MDS members provided support for the Port Truckers' strike that effectively shut down the Port on May Day.
As an emerging resistance organization/formation, MDS is open to students, non-students , workers ( some of the Port Truckers are MDS members ) , community organizers and individuals from other organizations who are interested in linking to non-campus and campus struggles, actions , issues and organizing efforts, as well as exploring how different groups can coalesce to effect radical direct action and social change.
